Sports Equipment Donation Drive

2019-09-01

Donate your gently-used equipment, with the goal of providing it to children ages 4-17—whose families are not able to afford it.

Sport Central Needs Cash Donations & Gently-Used Sport Equipment!

28 years ago, a group of community-minded individuals—led by United Sport & Cycle's Wilf Brooks—worked together to create Edmonton-based Sport Central, the first sport equipment charity of its kind in Canada.

Every day, the volunteers at Sport Central receive, repair, recycle, & redistribute gently-used equipment, with the goal of providing it to children ages 4-17—whose families are not able to afford it.

Thanks to the generosity of Albertans, Sport Central helped over 9,000 kids in need in the last year. In fact, close to 40% of all equipment donations to Sport Central are collected at United Sport & Cycle!

Over the last 28 years, Albertans have assisted over 150,000 kids from low-income families with safe sport gear: preserving their dignity and their right-to-play. Together, we have changed lives and gotten kids active!

And while donations have been steady, demand has been even greater. Sport Central let us know that they need the community's help this year to meet increasing demand!

What they urgently need now are:
∙    Junior hockey sticks (right and left-handed)
∙    Jocks & Jills for hockey
∙    Hockey helmets (especially sizes medium and large)
∙    Hockey neckguards
∙    Junior soccer shoes & shinpads
∙    Bells & locks for bikes
∙    Smaller hockey skates (sizes 3 - 6)
∙    Junior goalie equipment
∙    Baseball gloves & bats

For this reason, United Sport & Cycle is pleased to announce the launch of a formal donation drive in support of Sport Central!

From September 25th to October 6th, we invite Albertans to bring their gently-used sport equipment to either our Community Store (West) or our Main Store (Central).

As a thank you, anybody who donates a minimum of 5 pieces of equipment will receive a $25 United Sport & Cycle gift voucher to spend on anything in store!

United Sport & Cycle is also able to accept cash donations for Sport Central at any of their tills, and we are pleased to offer Albertans a $25 in-store voucher for any donation of $100 or more.

"Cash donations are used to purchase what isn't donated by the public," explains Sheldon Oleksyn, executive director of Sport Central. "Since it's not safe to send a child into a game with just a partial set of equipment, funds are needed to fill the equipment gaps we have."

"Fundraising also helps us with our bicycle program. We receive over 3,000 bikes per year and we need to purchase some parts and tools annually to fix them up and get them to kids in need!"
