Rules for Volleyball

Facilities

The League rents facilities in order to provide our leagues.  Facilities are rented from the City as well as private facilities.  Please respect the facilities so we can continue using them.  If we lose our permits for any reason then the season will be cancelled.

No Outdoor Shoes in any gym facility

No Marking running shoes

Leave the gym the way you found it.  Throw away your garbage.

If you do not adhere to the above rules then you will be asked to leave the gym.

Equipment

The league will provide volleyball nets, volleyballs, and scoreboards

Any other equipment (i.e. knee pads) is optional and is the players responsibility

Players must wear appropriate court shoes - No black soled or marking shoes

Players

Roster size is unlimited, but players must be registered with the league

6 Players on the floor at a time - 2 must be female

Minimum 4 players on the floor to play - 2 must be female.

If the minimum roster requirements are not met then the team will lose by default 10-0.

The league recommends teams having 8 players to have alternates to fill in when short

Teams are allowed to add to their roster at any point. Player info for every additional member must be sent to the league prior to them being allowed to play

Officiating

All Games are self officiated.  Players are responsible to make their own calls and keep their own score.

This is an adult rec league and we rely on our players being honest. When you are guilty of an infraction don’t assume no one saw you. Captains should speak up and call their own players fouls if they see them.

If a team continues to not call themselves, the League coordinator will warn them and report this to the league. If the same player or team continues to not call their infractions then they will be asked to sit out. Not calling your own infractions may also negatively affect your team’s sportsmanship rating and standings.

Objectionable Behaviour

Reckless, aggressive, threatening or unsportsmanlike behaviour will result in being ejected from the game. If this behaviour is repeated, the player may face ejection from the league. If this is a team wide issue, the entire team may be ejected from the league.

If a team or individual is found guilty of objectionable behaviour; The League Coordinator has the right to

             -  Warn a player

             -  Ask a player to sit out

             -  Ask a player to leave the gym

             -  Recommend to the league that a player be suspended

Judgment calls made by the League coordinators are final and protests will not be considered. Players or teams that argue with the coordinator will be subject to suspension or ejection from the league

This means

  - No arguing

  - No swearing towards the Rep or other Team.

  - No complaining

The League coordinators are not trained referees and are there to keep the game running and ensure games start and end on time. Please respect them. They have the right to make any player sit out or leave the gym. If asked to do either, you must do so immediately.

Pre Game

Teams should arrive at the gym 5 minutes prior to the scheduled game.

Teams should not enter the gym until the games before them are finished.

A five minute warm up will be available prior to the start of the game

Games must start and end on time. If your game starts late it does not get to run late.

Service and sides will be determined at the start of the match by a coin toss.

Subs

Substitutes may rotate in at any time during a stoppage in play.

Any alternate is to rotate out players in the last position before service and rotate in players at service.

Service

A serve may be over hand or under hand, as long as it is done so legally

Once a team has scored 5 points with the same server they must rotate one position. The team remains serving but a new server comes in from rotating.

Boundaries

Games are played within the regular volleyball court lines.

The ball is considered "IN" if it strikes part of the court lines

A player may step on the centre line, but may not step across the centre line.

Game Play

Games will be played to 25 and teams must win by two points - the fifth game of the best of five will be played to 15.

Players rotate clockwise prior to their team's serve.

A player may not hit the ball more than once in succession.

No more than three touches may be made per team before the ball is returned over the net

A block at the net does not count as a touch

A block on a serve is illegal

The ball must be hit legally - no holding, carrying, lifting or throwing

A player cannot touch, reach over, or under the net to hit the ball

Only when returning the ball may a player follow through over the net

Back row hitting is allowed as long as the player leaves the ground behind the attack line or does not leave the ground at all

Scoring

Rally Point scoring - using this scoring system, a point is scored during any stoppage in play, unless it is a re-service. This means any team can score a point, whether they are serving or not. Points are awarded to the opposite team when:

The ball touches the ground

A team has played the ball more than three times consecutively

The ball is held or pushed

The ball touches obstructions - such as basketball nets or ceiling

A player touches the ball twice consecutively

A player touches the net or a vertical marker on the antenna

A player completely crosses the centre line

A player contacts the ball above the opponent's court

A back line player, while in the attack area hits the ball into the opponent's court from above the height of the net

The ball lands outside or touches an object outside the lines of the court

The game is delayed persistently (taking longer than five seconds to serve)

The players wave arms, jump or form groups of two or more, the purpose of which is to form
a screen to conceal the server's actions

The served ball crosses the net with the help of a teammate

A service is blocked

Playoffs

All teams will get two playoff games regardless of where they finish in the standings or the score of their first playoff game.

Only the top 4 teams in each division will play for the league championship. All other teams will still get two playoff games.

Alcohol Consumption

Although the league encourages participants to have a good time, the city does not allow any open alcohol at any public venue.

Any player found to be under the influence of alcohol, or other controlled substance, will be automatically ejected from the league.

Any and all fines will be the responsibility of the teams. Teams will lose every scheduled game and will not be scheduled any other games until all fines are paid.

Rescheduling

Gym time is very limited. The League will not reschedule games for any reason.

Should you cancel or not show up for your game you will lose by default.

Defaults

If a team misses one game or does not meet the minimum roster requirements then they will lose by default 3-0.

Missing one game or not meeting the roster requirements will also result in the team losing their default deposit.

If a team misses defaults two games then they will be removed from the schedule with no refund.

Sportsmanship

This is a rec League and we expect all players and teams to have a fun first attitude. To help enforce this style of play we ask all teams to report the sportsmanship rating of the opposing team after every game.

2 – Good, fun spirited team, respected their opposition and made the game enjoyable

1 – Was not unsportsmanlike, but didn’t go out of their way to make the game enjoyable.

0 – Was not a fun team to play. They made the game less enjoyable and did not respect the opposition

If a team gets three 0 ratings in one season the league will decide whether the team is fit for this league and may remove them from the schedule.

Any complaints about the opposing team should brought to the attention of the League Rep and be done in a respectful and polite way at the end of the game.

Not playing to an opponent’s ability will result in poor sportsmanship. This means smashing a ball when the other team clearly cannot defend or return it.

Any issues throughout the game should be brought to the attention of your captain and the two captains and League Coordinator (LC) can discuss a solution. No one other then the Captain should discuss these issues with the opposition.

Scores

Captains are responsible for reporting scores and sportsmanship rating to the league coordinator following games.

Teams should confirm scores after each point.

If scores are not reported by the end of the regular season they will not count towards the standings

Refunds
Registration fees are fully refundable up to 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the season. After this, the league assumes you have committed and all fees are non-refundable. We require this time frame in order to create teams and to complete scheduling. If you register after the deadline and we can not place you there will be a $10 administration fee in order to process a refund.
